The Apology Factory – A Song from Love Song Week

It’s Love Song Week on my Bulmash Music playlist at YouTube.

This is a song that started with just one line as I was about to fall asleep: “Working overtime at the apology factory.” It took a bit of time for me to return to it, but once I did, the first lines came to me. But it took a while to come up with the chorus and more. I had to go through a lot of iterations to find just the right sound. I had a modern crooner version that sounded a bit too much like Michael Buble.

The hardest part was getting a track where the singing didn’t trip over the complex structure of the chorus. Too often, they’d go too fast through “apology factory” and then just right into the next line almost without pause. But I got a couple of takes I liked, a very “country” version and a R&B version, but this slow burn funk really hit me. Still sounds a bit country, despite that not being a characteristic I specified.

I’ve only had a couple of breakups where I wanted her back, but I have never cheated. Putting myself into the mindset of a guy who cheated made me go back to all the romcoms, romantic dramas, and country songs I’ve heard to try to get me into that mindset. I believe I did. And I absolutely love the way this version nails that last line of the chorus.
